Types of Nutriton
ENTERAL NUTRITION: consists of a set of therapeutic procedures used for the maintenance or recovery of nutritional status by enteral nutrition. It is done when there is impairment of the patient or medical contraindications to eat by mouth, by a controlled intake of nutrients, alone or in combination, to be incorporated into the body through a nasogastric tube or orally, industrial or not used solely or partly to replace or supplement oral feeding in malnourished patients or not, according to their nutritional needs, both inpatient, outpatient or at home.
PARENTERAL NUTRITION: Can be used as sole therapy or support, depending on the patient’s condition. Is the intravenous use of macro and micronutrients, through peripheral or central route. The main indications are the negative balance of plasma proteins, significant loss or inability to maintain body weight, patients with multiple injuries or prolonged post-operative. The goal is to maintain the controls biochemical, clinical and anthropometric that may decrease infectious complications, metabolic or infusion. Basically we can say is the administration of basic nutrients (glucose and protein), in addition to water, electrolytes, minerals and vitamins through the intravenous route, which allows the maintenance of homeostasis, since calories and amino acids are necessary parts.
